  1. WHAT I ALWAYS WANTED TO SAY TO THE MISSIONARY by Hamid S. Atiyyah, Ph.D. The missionaries who knock at my front door belong to different denominations but they all have the same objective: converting me to their faith. In attempting to fulfill this mission, they are indirectly showing contempt for my personal convictions and insulting my intelligence. It is also unfair to me that they always come prepared with well-rehearsed sermons and elegant hand-outs and leave before my mind can come up with a full response. This is why I decided to include in this leaflet all the points which I never had the opportunity to raise with them. Like their sermons, my arguments are based on the New Testament but my conclusions are different from theirs. Was Jesus a divine or human being? Jesus lived and behaved like other human beings. He ate, drank, slept, became angry, felt sadness and pain and finally died. His birth was certainly a miracle but the creation of Adam and Eve, as described in the Bible, was even a greater miracle. With regard to the miracles and wonders of Jesus, Peter wrote that these were performed by God through Jesus.(Acts 2:22). This fact was also made quite obvious by Jesus himself when he performed the miracle of feeding five thousand men; Jesus "took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, and gave thanks to God.”(Matthew 14:19). And if Jesus was a divine being, as all the missionaries insist, then why did the Devil try to tempt him by offering him the kingdoms of the world in return for worshipping the Devil instead of God? Was Jesus the son of God in a physical sense? Jesus used the term "the son of God" to describe himself as well as other righteous persons. For example, he called the peace makers the children of God: "Happy are those who work for peace, God will call them his children."(Matthew 5:9). He also made clear to his disciples how to qualify for this great honor: "Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven."(Matthew 5:44-45). Jesus frequently referred to God as "the Father in heaven". For example, he said: "Pray to your Father who is unseen, And your Father, who sees what you do in private, will reward you."(Matthew 6:6) Was Jesus a prophet? Jesus called himself a prophet: "A prophet is respected everywhere except in his own home town and by his own family."(Matthew 13:57). As we all know, the mission of a prophet is to convey God's message to mankind and this is exactly how Jesus defined his mission in the following statements: - "What I teach is not my own teaching, but it comes from God, who sent me."(John 7:16). - "The one who sent me, however, is truthful, and I tell the world only what I have heard from him."(John 8:26). - "l do nothing on my own authority, but I say only what the Father has instructed me to say."(John 8:27) - "I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has commanded me what I must say and speak. And I know that his command brings eternal life. What I say, then, is what the Father has told me to say."(John 12: 49-50). - "And the teachings you have heard is not mine, but comes from the Father, who sent me."(John 14:24). - "I gave them the message that you gave me, and they received it."(John 17:8). Like all God's prophets and messengers, Jesus clearly testified that there is only one true, all-knowledgeable, and all-powerful God: - "And eternal life means knowing you, the only true God." (John 17:3) - "...For [the Father] is greater than I."(John 14:28). - "No one knows, however, when that day or hour will come –neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son; only the Father knows."(Mark 13:32). - "l do not have the right to choose who will sit at my right and my left. These places belong to those for whom my Father has prepared them." (Matthew 20:23). Why was the Canaanite mother called a dog? The New Testament tells us that a Canaanite woman came to Jesus and asked him to cure her daughter. Jesus reportedly told her: "I have been sent only to the lost sheep of the people of Israel." And after she repeated her request he said: "It isn't right to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." The woman was persistent: "That's true, sir," she answered, "but even the dogs eat the leftovers that fall from their masters' table.”(Matthew 15: 21-28; Mark 7:24-30). Obviously, the children in the above statement ascribed to Jesus refer to the people of Israel while the Canaanites and the rest of mankind with them, including the ancestors of all Christians, are the dogs. In Middle Eastern societies, calling a person a dog was and still is a major insult. The Canaanite mother ignored the insult because she was a dedicated and loving mother and desperately wanted Jesus to heal her daughter. My deep esteem for Jesus forbids me from believing this story. Was Jesus sent to all mankind? Jesus said to his disciples: "Do not go to any Gentile territory or any Samaritan towns. Instead, you are to go to the lost sheep of the people of Israel."(Matthew 10:5-7). In his reply to the Canaanite woman mentioned earlier, he also indicated that he was sent only to the people of Israel. In other words, his message was not intended for the vast majority of mankind including almost all dead and living Christians, the missionaries who are trying to convert me, and myself. Was Jesus' crucifixion the only way to obtain God's forgiveness? The missionaries tell me that Jesus' crucifixion was necessary for the redemption of mankind. Surely, the all merciful God does not require sacrifices to forgive our sins. Jesus himself reminded his people of what the Scripture said on this subject: "It is kindness that I want not animal sacrifices."(Matthew 9:13). Also, when an innocent man is wrongly accused, humiliated, tortured, and then savagely executed, I expect God to punish his tormentors and murderers rather than forgive them and all other sinners as well. 2008
